User Reviews about Acronis True Image Home 2010
I have been caught recently by a some Fake Virus Scan Software infections. What a pain to get rid of, especially when the infection also disables any malware removal tools from working as well (in my case I could not run any .exe files)It took me about 3 hours to get rid of the nasty bug. Although I back up my data regularly, it would have taken me about two days if I had to reload windows, all of the software and the data. Here is where disk cloning software shines. I used Ghost in the past, but my version would only work and boot from a floppy, and not a USB floppy either. I wanted something that would work with my laptop and external USB Hard Drives. Based on reading cloning software reviews I was certain that I wanted a plain Jane software that would boot into its own OS, Dos or Linux, and would backup and restore outside of windows environment. Running this type of tool within windows is asking for trouble and that is where most people giving the product lower reviews had problems.
I just wanted simple backups! Fortunately Acronis Home 2010 does not have to be installed into windows. You CAN use the supplied disk as a self booting program (change bios to have CD/DVD drive be the first boot device thru hitting F1, F2, or Del on most computers while booting. Once there in the Linux environment you can access majority of the disk and file backup capabilities of Acronis with a nice graphical interface. I used this method to back up about a 100GB WinXP system to an external drive in only 45 minutes!. Wow. I tried a restore to a spare drive as a test and it worked flawlessly. I am good to go, for a minimal investment I will never have to reinstall a full system!
-- Excellent when used in its simplest form
Older versions worked just fine. Always 'New and improved' seems to have a problem. My Laptop, (IBM) has a hidden image portiton for emergency recreation of the drive. For some reason, this version sees the hidden partition as unrecognizable. It will not boot to the hidden image! I have been working with Acronis support, (a little slow), with no luck. They have tried fixes three times, but it is still broken. It did, however 'Clone' my drive, just not the hidden image. Older version I used several years ago worked just fine. Shame I don't have that copy anymore. -- "Acronis not True Image Home" on an IBM Laptop
